A key aspect to Mighty Goose is the ‘roll dodge’ to avoid enemy fire. The only major complaint I have is about the controls - specifically the lack of a remapping option. This is always a blast to unleash, but unfortunately mighty mode can’t be stored up – short cutscenes reset the meter, including the ones right before boss battles. Once full, players can activate mighty mode, which turns Goose into a rage-induced monstrosity with greater firepower and near-invincibility. Whether on foot or in a vehicle, attacking enemies fills up the mighty meter. Either way, the vehicles control smoothly and are a welcome inclusion to the already stellar gameplay. A few of these sections are part of the natural game progression (including one boss battle) but a few vehicles are hidden off the main path. In addition to the standard 2D run-and-gun action, there are also a few sections where Goose will jump into a mech, motorcycle, or aircraft to add a little extra oomph to its attack. My personal favorite was the tesla gun – an electric firearm that spreads a current from enemy to enemy and packs a wallop.
Fighting back, Goose has its standard hand cannon, but can pick up more powerful weapons like a machine gun or shotgun. Part of that feast is the scenery within the game’s ten large stages, each one filled with numerous Void King henchmen and humongous bosses hoping to make foie gras out of our hero. Things can become a little chaotic, especially when there are dozens of enemies on screen, but things run smoothly and the graphics are a feast for the eyes. The pixel-art graphics in Mighty Goose are bright and colorful, reminding me of something I might have found in the arcades of the mid-’90s. The plot is as lighthearted as one would expect from a game about a pistol-packing, bionic goose. Goose is charged with hunting down the maniacal, cosmos conquering Void King. Players take on the role of Goose, who is (conveniently!) a goose with a few robotic upgrades like bionic arms, a hand cannon, and rocket booster feet. Mighty Goose is one such, and it’s a blast. Sure, a title can be serious and realistic, but there’s something special about those that are just a little goofy. One of my favorite things about videogames is the absurd premises that allow me to escape reality each night. WTF It’s convenient that the goose’s name is Goose. LOW The dodge button not being adjacent to the fire button. Not to mention the fact your goose puts on a pair of sunglasses for no coherent reason when riding these vehicles.HIGH Hopping in a vehicle for extra firepower. Since there will always be a barrage of enemies to kill, there isn’t a single moment in which the addition of a mech suit won’t feel welcoming. I really liked how the game just allows you to order one of them whenever you’re able to afford them during any section in any level. They give you an additional set of hit points, feature infinite ammo, and can run over enemies with ease, even though it’s quite a risky move.
Riding vehicles in Mighty Goose is just like riding them in Metal Slug. You can also collect coins and spend them on brand new weapons and vehicles at any moment you want: just pause the game, access the shop, and order a brand new mech suit if you can afford it. Thankfully, once you beat the first mission, you’ll gain access to allies that can provide you with passive buffs that will keep you alive for way longer than you would if you tried to play this maddening game by yourself. You can ride a tank in specific sections.īullets will fly around all over the screen, and you’ll barely be able to pay attention to what’s happening. Mighty Goose is so hard it feels unfair at times, but once you learn about its gameplay mechanics, and once you get a hold of any other weapon besides the terrible pistol they give you at the beginning of the mission, then it’s utter chaos. Foes just keep showing up with powerful equipment, moving around like ninjas on a coffee binge, shooting you with extreme prejudice… and it’s fun. It is downright insane! Upon booting Mighty Goose up for the first time, there is a chance you will die right at the second enemy encounter. It takes the art style, animations, and gameplay from SNK’s masterpiece of an action series, tweaks it a little bit with brand new features, adds a brand new avian protagonist, and jacks the framerate and pacing up to numbers beyond the realm of human comprehension.
